Modoc Joint Unified School District Receives Approval from Pit River Tribe to Retain Braves and Warriors Mascots

[Alturas, CA] – [February 7, 2025] – The Modoc Joint Unified School District (MJUSD) is pleased to announce that the Pit River Tribe has granted formal consent for the continued use of the Braves mascot at Modoc High School and the Warriors mascot at Modoc Middle School. This decision aligns with the provisions of California Assembly Bill 3074, which allows school districts to maintain Native American mascots with the approval of a federally recognized tribe.

At a Modoc Joint Unified School District Governing Board meeting on January 14, 2025, Native student leaders Saige Townsend-Brown, Betty George, Justin Holloway, and Savannah French-Connors, delivered a powerful presentation highlighting the cultural and historical significance of these mascots. Their presentation was accompanied by a letter of support and a petition signed by a significant number of Native students, advocating for the preservation of these symbols of school pride and heritage.

"We are deeply grateful to the Pit River Tribe for their support and recognition of our commitment to honoring Native American heritage with respect and dignity," said Tom O'Malley, Superintendent of MJUSD. "This approval reaffirms our shared dedication to fostering cultural appreciation and ensuring that our students' voices are heard."

MJUSD serves a diverse student population, including students from multiple tribal backgrounds. The district remains committed to working collaboratively with Native communities to ensure that cultural representation within its schools is meaningful and respectful.

The Modoc Joint Unified School District extends its sincere appreciation to the Pit River Tribe for their time, consideration, and partnership in this matter. The district looks forward to continuing efforts to engage with Native American communities in meaningful and constructive dialogue.
